  From the beginning, humanity has set aside special times and places to commune with the divine. Shamanism is as ancient as human consciousness itself and from Paleolithic times the magic of the shaman involved the cycles of Nature, the spirits of plants and animals and especially the hunt. The Shaman's capacity to transform into an animal and read the signs and omens of Nature to find game is a phenomenon found throughout the world.
  The amulets and talismans of the Upper Paleolithic are essentially identical to the medicine bundle of the shaman living today. Thirty thousand years later, remnants of this ancient way can be found in almost every indigenous culture still existing today, whether it be amongst the Kung bushmen of Africa, the Australian Aborigines, the Mongolians of the Native Indians of the America's. This body of Shamanic information passed from generation to generation is a basic survival guide to planet Earth.
  It speaks of true sustainability in terms of hunting patterns, the collecting and growing of plants, the construction of shelters, and the rules for living together, including the taboos of kinship and mating patterns. It is no wonder that it has been said that every time AN OLD SHAMAN DIES, IT IS EQUIVALENT OF A GREAT LIBRARY BURNING DOWN.

-The Shaman is an ecstatic visionary who comes into power in a number of ways. Among the people of Siberia, shamanic power is passed through the mother's line as part of a person's inheritance. In other cultures, the calling to shamanism comes through divine intercession, dreams vision-producing plants, the appearance of totemic clan animals, or illness.
-Regardless of the path taken, the making of a shaman is a process of soul- making. The shaman is capable of traveling into the depths of the underworld, or taking flight and soaring into the sky realm. This shamanic journeying enables the shaman to come to grips with the mystery of life and death and to return to ordinary reality as a transfigured being. The shaman thus becomes an intermediary between the subterranean world of the unconscious  and the rarefied world of the super conscious.

" The task of the shaman is to make the spirit-journey for their people, to find the source of an illness, to understand what spirits have been offended, to locate a lost soul, to find game, or to make amends between the spirit world and the community. To perform these sacred duties, the shaman may also shape shift into animal forms. The shaman is thus the master traveler who knows how to transform consciousness and reality at will."

 '  Animals who appear in dreams are seen as divine intercession from the animal world. And strange or seemingly magical encounters with a wild are viewed as the animal offering itself to the person as a spirit guide and a source of protection.
      words were not enough to express my feelings when i had this experience. it was more than awesome... wild as they are yet there was no such feeling of fear. i had this magical encounter when i was feeling so ill. up to the present moment they were still vivid in my mind and it was such a blissful feeling.
        This source of protection and power does not come from an individual creature. although it might manifest through a special relationship with a particular animal.
        The power of the Medicine Animal comes from the collective spirit, or morphogenic field of the species. It is the spirit of the individual animal and its entire line of ancestral beings who comes as the Medicine Animal."
